CA Setup is where you decide how continuous assessment (CA) and the exam share each subject’s 100 marks. A CA scheme lists your class assessment items, such as classwork, tests and projects, with how much each one counts. Whatever is left over goes to the exam.
- Where Exams & Grading → CA Setup
- Who can use it Anyone whose role includes CA Setup.
Create a CA scheme
- Click Add CA Scheme.
- Type a Name, for example Standard 30:70 Scheme.
- Click Save CA Scheme.
The list shows each scheme’s CA Weight and Exam Weight. A new scheme has no items yet, so it starts at CA 0% and Exam 100%.
Add the assessment items
- Click Manage Components next to the scheme.
- Click Add Component.
- Type a Name (for example Classwork), the Weight (%) it counts towards the subject total, and the Max Score teachers will mark it out of (for example 20).
- Click Save Component. Repeat for each item.
The CA weight is the sum of the item weights, and the exam gets the rest. Three items of 10% each make CA 30%, so the exam is 70%. The heading on the components page shows both, for example (CA 30%, Exam 70%).
Each item needs a weight above zero, and the weights together can’t go over 100%.
How the CA mark is worked out
Each item is first turned into a percentage of its own maximum, then counted at its own weight. The raw marks are not simply added up, so an item marked out of 50 doesn’t count for more than one marked out of 10.
Here is a fictional student, Ama Owusu, on a 30:70 scheme:
| Item | Weight | Mark | As a % | Counts for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classwork | 10% | 15 / 20 | 75% | 7.5 |
| Class Test | 10% | 30 / 50 | 60% | 6.0 |
| Project | 10% | 8 / 10 | 80% | 8.0 |
| CA | 30% | 71.7% | 21.5 of 30 | |
| Exam | 70% | 64 / 100 | 64% | 44.8 |
| Subject total | 100% | 66.3 |
Her CA percentage (71.7%) is what shows in the CA % column in Score Entry. The total, 66.3, is then graded on the exam’s grading scale.
Changing a scheme mid-term
Each student’s figures are worked out and stored at the moment their scores are saved. If you change an item’s weight or maximum, or add or remove an item, scores already saved keep their old figures until someone saves them again in Score Entry.
Important: scores can only be re-saved while the exam period is Draft or Returned. Settle the scheme before teachers start entering marks.
The same goes for scores saved before èLyn started weighting each item this way: they keep their old figures until they are saved again.
Good to know
- You pick the scheme for each exam when you set up the exam period in Score Entry. Different exams can use different schemes.
- A scheme that any exam period uses can’t be deleted. Deleting an unused scheme also deletes its items.
- A scheme with no items is “exam only”: teachers enter just the exam mark.
- Teachers can still type one overall CA percentage for a student instead of item marks, using Manual CA in Score Entry.
